Merchants experiencing errors when accessing multiple areas of Shopify

Details

Between 19:49 PM and 20:06 PM UTC on May 6, 2024 one of our edge networking providers, Cloudflare performed changes to how they route traffic to Shopify. These changes were intended to align Shopify’s storefronts configuration to their latest standard. As a result of these changes, we observed a partial traffic loss and errors that merchants and users saw Shopify-wide. Internal alerts notified us, and we immediately reached out to Cloudflare.

Due to the traffic loss, our systems automatically scaled down. In order to prepare for the traffic to suddenly return once Cloudflare reverted their change, we subsequently began to scale up our systems. Seven minutes after this incident began, Cloudflare reverted their change and we were not yet fully scaled up to accommodate the new traffic. This temporary lack of capacity caused an additional ten minutes of downtime while our system responded.

Shopify is taking the following remediation steps to ensure our systems respond in more resilient ways such as minimizing impact and reducing the duration of the incident :

- Improve our automated scaling responses to a significant drop in traffic to ensure that we’re not overwhelmed when that traffic suddenly returns.
- Improve our processes and partnership with CloudFlare in order to make responding to incidents faster and more effective.
- Enhance the routing and escalation of our internal alerts for edge network outages to alert us of similar misconfigurations.
- Isolate more of our services from this type of interruption in the future.

About Our Shopify Status Page Integration

Shopify is an eCommerce and Web Hosting solution that StatusGator has been monitoring since March 2015. Over the past about 9 years, we have collected data on on more than 2,156 outages that affected Shopify users. When Shopify publishes downtime on their status page, they do so across 9 components using 4 different statuses: up, warn, down, and maintenance which we use to provide granular uptime metrics and notifications.

More than 800 StatusGator users monitor Shopify to get notified when it's down, is under maintenance, or has an outage. This makes it one of the most popular ecommerce services monitored on our platform. We've sent more than 155,200 notifications to our users about Shopify incidents, providing transparency and peace of mind. You can get alerts by signing up for a free StatusGator account.

If Shopify is having system outages or experiencing other critical issues, red down notifications appear on the status page. In most cases, it means that core functions are not working properly, or there is some other serious customer-impacting event underway.

Warn notifications are used when Shopify is undergoing a non-critical issue like minor service issues, performance degradation, non-core bugs, capacity issues, or problems affecting a small number of users.

Shopify posts separate notifications for planned maintenance work. StatusGator will notify subscribers when Shopify enters a pre-planned maintenance window, keeping you up to date.

Shopify does not publish a feed of proactive maintenance events on their status page at this time. If they do, be sure to let us know and we'll aggregate Shopify maintenance events into your unified calendar.

When Shopify posts issues on their status page, we collect the main headline message and include that brief information or overview in notifications to StatusGator subscribers.

When Shopify has outages or other service-impacting events on their status page, we pull down the detailed informational updates and include them in notifications. These messages often include the current details about how the problem is being mitigated, or when the next update will occur.

Because Shopify has several components, each with their individual statuses, StatusGator can differentiate the status of each component in our notifications to you. This means, you can filter your status page notifications based on the services, regions, or components you utilize. This is an essential feature for complex services with many components or services spread out across many regions.
